What's your opinion on real actors in games?
Main Post:
Increasingly often you see real actors as computer game characters. They're not only side characters or companions like Keanu Reeves in Cyberpunk, but sometimes even the protagonist or an entire cast like Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkels and many more in Death Stranding or Cameron Monaghan in the newer Star Wars games.
How do you feel about this topic?
My opinion might be unpopular, but I don't really like it. I always prefer fictional characters over the looks of actors I see all the time in different roles. And I can't really explain why, but it somehow kills my immersion, even though the mentioned games are still great, of course.
Top Comment: My opinion might be unpopular, but I don't really like it. I'm in a similar boat. I mean, Idris Elba as Reed in PL worked for me, but Reed would probably have worked just as well if he hadn't been "played" by him. Video games give us the ability to break away from real life constraints - and this trend seems to go backwards: Instead of giving Reed his own, unique appearance, mannerisms and character, he's, well: Idris Elba - and not even in a wig. It does crack my immersion a fair bit, because I still don't think of Reed as Reed, but as Idris, and that's an ongoing issue for every one of the actors I recognize in games. Add to that that those actors probably command a healthy bit of money for their services, and at least for my own tastes: I can do well without them. I'll not throw a shit fit if they are in, but it really does not add much in terms of value for me, and even detracts in some places. I'd rather the money gets spent on delivering a better game than having a celeb appearance. I do like how they did it in BG3, though: They mo-capped the performances, and used unique models in-game. Works great!

Why are the Squid Game cast so controversial?
Main Post:
Doing the research you will find that a number of them are controversial figures. Gi-Hun actor was accused of drunk driving in 1999 and even in 2000 had 2 separate incidents of assault.
Oh Il-Nam was accused of sexual assault in 2016.
And then there's another guy in season 2 that hired an underaged prostitute.
It does seem Squid Game is literally bringing controversial figures to put them back in the spotlight.
Top Comment: If I recall correctly, Gi-hun's assault cases were debunked. I think it was proven he wasn't even there for one of them and the other one was a random lady/potential stalker refusing to get out of his car so he physically pulled her out and accidentally injured her knee in the process so she argued it was assault. So I think it's just the DUI's for him, but yeah there are a bunch of convicted or alleged sex offenders in the cast unfortunately.

Top Comment: Gotta say hearing that the single player DLC for GTA V was called "Secret Agent Trevor" internally really upsets me more than any of the other times its been mentioned. I know it got cancelled, and I know why it was really cancelled but still... I want that.

Top Comment: I am really tired of the narrative that only trans people should be able to play trans characters in movies. I think trans people should be able to portray any character they like and are good at. And the other way round too. If we limit trans actors only to trans roles, it sounds kind of restrictive and I think it might harm their representation in long term
thoughts on finnick actor?
Main Post:
personally, I think he did an amazing job in catching fire. but then in mockingjay, he kinda dropped off. he started doing this gravelly face which I wasn't a huge fan off, and I feel like quite a bit of character depth was lost in those movies.
no hate to the actor though, I've heard he's really good in other stuff and like I said, amazing casting for catching fire!
Top Comment: He was suffering from a mental breakdown in Mockingjay though, so he wasn’t any longer the confident, sassy man that we saw in Catching Fire But yes you’re right, his character depth was a bit lost in Mockingjay cause he didn’t get enough screentime
It doesn't matter that a cisgender man played a trans woman in Squid Game 2. He dominated that role and made a huge impact by familiarizing the world with trans people.
Main Post:
I see people complaining, "they should've casted a transgender woman for a transgender role."
But the cisgender actor shouldn't be the focus. The focus should be the fact that millions of people around the world see a transgender figure making a serious impact in a show. The focus should be that this show humanizes a transgender person.
Most people including myself, have never even met a transgender person in real life. They just hear that transgender people exist in the world through media or controversial news.
Right now Squid Game 2 has broken viewership records with 68 million views in 4 days and ranking No. 1 in 92 countries. I bet with that many views, it will make more people familiar with trans people. It definitely did for me. I love this show.
Top Comment: The director has said in interviews that openly lgbtq performers don’t really exist in Korea. It’s a super conservative culture. I’m not sure he had much of a choice.
